Cómo es el Writing

Formato del Writing de B2 First
ParteTareaExtensión
Part 1Un essay obligatorio.

Ejemplo corregido

In your English class you have been talking about technology and young people. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay.

Do teenagers spend too much time on their phones?

Notes. Write about: 1. school work; 2. friendships; 3. your own idea. Give reasons for your opinion.

Texto original de Passington, con sus errores:

Most teenagers today carry a phone everywhere, and many adults complain that they never put it down. In my view, the problem is not the phone itself but how it is used.

As far as school work is concerned, phones can be a real distraction. It is difficult to concentrate on a maths problem when messages keep arriving every few minutes. However, the same phone can also be useful for checking a word or watching a video that explains a difficult topic.

Friendships are a different matter. Some people argue that teenagers only talk through screens, but in my experience phones help them to stay in touch with friends who lives far away.

Finally, there is the question of sleep. Many young people use their phones in bed until very late, and this make them tired the next day. This is probably the most serious problem.

To sum up, I do not think teenagers spend too much time on their phones in general, but they should switch them off at night.

  • friends who lives far away → friends who live far away. Concordancia: friends es plural.
  • this make them tired → this makes them tired. Tercera persona del singular.

Articles wanted! The place I keep going back to. Is there a place you visit again and again? What is it like, and why do you keep returning? Write an article answering these questions.

Texto original de Passington, con sus errores:

A beach that never gets old

Have you ever been somewhere so many times that it feels like part of your family? For me, that place is a small beach near Cádiz.

At first sight, there is nothing special about it. There are no fancy restaurants and no hotels, just sand, rocks and a little bar that sells the best fried fish I have ever tasted. In August it gets very crowded of tourists, but if you go in October, you can have the whole beach almost to yourself.

So why do I keep going back? Partly, it is the sunsets. Every evening people stop what they are doing and watch the sun disappear into the sea, and nobody says a word. But the real reason is the memories. I learnt to swim there when I was six, and I have taken every important person in my life to see it.

If you ever find a place like this, hold on to it. Some places are worth more than any new destination.

  • crowded of tourists → crowded with tourists. Preposición: crowded with.

Ejemplo corregido

You have received this email from your English-speaking friend, Sam.

I'm coming to your city for a week in March and I'd like to do a short course while I'm there: maybe cooking, dance or photography. Which one would you recommend, and why? Is there anything I should know before I book?

Write your email.

Texto original de Passington, con sus errores:

Hi Sam,

Great news that you're coming in March! I can't wait to see you.

About the course, I'd definitely go for cooking. There's a small school in the old town where they teach you to make three or four typical dishes in one afternoon, and at the end you eat everything with the other students. It's a fun way to meet people, and you'll learn things you can actually use at home. Dance classes are good too, but most of them are in the evenings, and you'd miss the best part of the day.

One thing you should know: the cooking courses are quite popular, so book at least two weeks before you come. Also, tell them if you're vegetarian, because a lot of dishes here has meat or fish in them.

If you want, I could come with you to one of the classes. Let me know which dates suits you best!

Love,

Marta

Ejemplo corregido

The manager of the sports centre where you are a member wants to attract more young people. She has asked members to write a report explaining why few young people use the centre and recommending some changes.

Write your report.

Texto original de Passington, con sus errores:

Introduction

The aim of this report is to explain why few young people use the sports centre and to suggest some changes that could attract them.

Reasons

According to the members I spoke to, the main problem is the timetable. Most classes start at 10 a.m. or 6 p.m., when students are either at school or doing homework. Price is another factor: a monthly membership costs 45 euros, which is too expensive for most teenagers. Finally, several people mentioned that the gym equipment are old and that the music in the classes is not very modern.

Recommendations

Firstly, I would suggest adding classes in the late evening and on Saturday mornings. Secondly, the centre could offer a cheaper membership for under-25s, perhaps with a limit on the hours. It would also be worth replacing some of the older machines.

Conclusion

If these changes were introduced, I believe the centre would become much more attractive to young people, and the number of members would increase.

  • the gym equipment are old → the gym equipment is old. Equipment es incontable: va en singular.

Reviews wanted! A series that's worth your time. Tell us about a TV series you have watched recently. What is it about, what did you like or dislike, and would you recommend it to other people?

Texto original de Passington, con sus errores:

Ward Nine: a hospital drama with a heart

If you think hospital series are all the same, give this one a chance. Ward Nine follows four young nurses working nights in a busy hospital in Manchester, and each episode covers a single shift, from ten at night to eight in the morning.

What I liked most is how realistic it feels. The nurses are tired, they make mistakes and they argue about small things, just like real people do. There is also plenty of humour, which stops the series from becoming too depressing. The actress who plays Megan, the youngest nurse, is particularly good.

On the negative side, some episodes are quite slow, specially in the middle of the series, when the same problems come up again and again. A few medical scenes may also be too much for sensitive viewers.

Overall, I would recommend Ward Nine to anyone who enjoys character-driven drama. Just watch it with a box of tissues nearby!

  • specially in the middle → especially in the middle. Especially: «sobre todo». Specially es «a propósito para».

Fuentes
